Learn and Grow Depot child development center hosted an annual Thanksgiving feast with a different twist. The goal of the meal was to help educate the children and family members on the benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy nutrition. Almost 90 family members attended the event and participated in both a nutritional and physical activity along with a potluck turkey dinner.
The nutritional activities included tasting many kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables, some of which were new to the children. The fruit and vegetable displays depicted several favorite Sesame Street characters. A ‘My Plate’ challenge provided education on food groups and portion sizes.
After the physical activity, which was an obstacle course, parents participated in a survey to determine if the learning activities were beneficial and enjoyable. The parents provided positive feedback which indicated they would try some of the new things they learned at home. Learn and Grow Depot received a Family Fun, Food, and Fitness grant from the Kansas Department of Education to promote healthy eating and fitness.
